Let’s get to know each other better! Intercultural initiatives in the Metropolitan Public Library of Gdynia
One of the Library’s major goals is to establish an open and safe space for everyone to enjoy time together and get to know each other better. Last but not least, it is not in vain that we repeatedly say that “libraries are people”, and our branches are “meeting places”. It concerns both new residents of Gdynia and those with long-term residency, those who speak Polish and those who are just getting to know the language, those who were born here and those who came to settle here permanently or just for a while. The library is, after all, for everyone – so let’s get to know each other a little better in May!
On May 14 at 11:00 a.m., we invite all foreigners speaking English for a walking tour of Gdynia! We will visit some of the city’s major historical sites, learn about the cultural institutions operating in the city, but also find out where the offices are located that we may happen to be visiting one day. We meet in front of Gdynia City Hall (Aleja Marszałka Piłsudskiego 52/54).
On May 17 at 4:00 p.m., we invite everyone who learns Polish as a foreign language to the Chylonia Library for a meeting, during which we will learn some useful hacks and tricks for learning Polish effectively. Classes will be conducted by an experienced teacher – it is worth taking advantage of her knowledge and expertise!
On May 24 at 4:00 p.m. at the Oksywie Library, an intercultural workshop will take place, during which we will talk a bit about the reason why people from different countries sometimes have different views of the world. So please feel invited to meet with different cultures – and also with yourselves. Since that’s what this workshop is all about: getting to know each other better!
On May 26 at 4:00 p.m., the Chylonia Library will host yet another workshop, during which we will try to answer a very important question: How to understand Poland and Poles? Living in a new city can be a challenge, let alone a new country! During the meeting we will talk about Polish customs, traditions, but also a little bit about Polish culture. We definitely recommend it to absolutely everyone, not just foreigners.
But that’s not all!! In addition to individual meetings and workshops, the Metropolitan Public Library of Gdynia is also launching volunteer-run ąę Café. Practice Polish with the Library, intended for those who already know Polish and want to expand their vocabulary and simply practice in a friendly, low-key setting. In May, we invite you to the Oksywie Library on May 13, 20 and 27 at 10:00 a.m., and to the Chylonia Library on May 12 and 19 at 5:00 p.m.
All activities are free of charge. Apart from the ąę Café, all meetings are carried out under the project “Library for Everyone. Łódź, Gdynia, Cracow, Bergen – different cities, a shared idea. Widening access to culture – Polish and Norwegian model-driven solutions”. Ąę Café is inspired by the “Språkkafé” activities implemented by the Bergen Offentlige Bibliotek.
